EXPERIENCE:

Karen is a longstanding expert media and First Amendment lawyer with substantial in-house and outside counsel experience.  She provides strategic counseling to news, online and entertainment content providers across all platforms in a host of matters, including defamation, pre-publication demands, post-publication cease and desists, subpoenas and retraction demands, invasion of privacy, right of publicity, prior restraint, copyright and internet law issues.

Prior to joining Mandell Menkes, Karen was for many years the Vice President/Deputy General Counsel for Tribune Publishing where she was the lead operations lawyer and sole newsroom counsel to Tribune’s major metros, including the Chicago Tribune and the Baltimore Sun. At Tribune, Karen simultaneously served as VP/Legal for the Chicago Tribune Media Group where she handled newsroom counseling for Tribune’s suburban papers, company-wide litigation, insurance, marketing, and manufacturing and distribution issues for the Tribune’s printing plant, including issues relating to independent contractor delivery agents.  Prior to joining Tribune, Karen was a litigation partner at Sonnenschein, Nath and Rosenthal (now Dentons) and law clerk to the Honorable Hubert L. Will of the Northern District of Illinois.

Karen regularly conducts newsroom training on a variety of topics including defamation, privacy and copyright. Karen has served as the past president of the Illinois Press Association and was a former Central Division Chair for the American Bar Association’s Forum on Communications Law.
